Sugar Ramos Apologizes to Davey Moore’s Wife

Mar. 24, 1963 - Troubled boxer Sugar Ramos personally expressed his sorrow to the wife of Davey Moore in a private and highly emotional meeting at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles today. Moore has been in a coma and near death since Thursday night, when he suffered a brain injury while losing the featherweight title to Ramos. The 21-year-old Cuban visited with Mrs. Geraldine Moore in a reception room on the fourth floor. “I’ve been so nervous,” said Ramos, his eyes brimming with tears. “I wanted to see him — or you.” “I am very sorry,” the young man whispered in a choked voice. Then Ramos bowed his head, unable to go on, and began to sob softly. “I want you to understand I’m not blaming you for anything,” replied Mrs. Moore. “I realize it is hard for you to know you aren’t the one to blame. But I’m closest to Davey, and I’m asking you not to take it that way. It was God’s act.” The newly crowned champion could only feebly shake his head. “Please pray for him, because he’s still fighting,” Mrs. Moore continued. “This time he’s fighting a rougher fight.” “I’m praying every night,” said Ramos finally, “and I’ll continue to pray every night.” With that, the despondent fighter began to weep again. “Please don’t,” comforted Mrs. Moore. “I have faith in God that soon Davey will be well again.” Moore is the second opponent fatality for 21-year-old Ramos. José (Tiger) Blanco, a Cuban lightweight, died after a fight with him in Havana in November 1958. When asked today if he would continue to fight, Ramos said, “I don’t know — I really don’t.”
