Sept. 9, 1961 - Ted Williams said today he was "pretty sure" Roger Maris would break Babe Ruth's 60-home-run record this season. The retired Boston Red Sox slugger also said he thought Maris's teammate, Mickey Mantle, had a good chance. Williams said the key to Maris's home run prowess was his comparative success in getting the ball in the air. "It's hard to see how a hitter can hit around .270 and get 150 hits at most and end up with 60 homers," said Williams. "But, apparently, Maris gets that loft to them more times than any other hitter that swings for homers."
