Sept. 8, 1962 - Abner Haynes scored 4 touchdowns and Lenny Dawson passed for 202 yards today to lead the Dallas Texans to a season-opening 42-28 AFL victory over the Boston Patriots. The 190-pound Haynes ran 2, 25, and 30 yards for touchdowns and caught a 9-yard pass for another. Dawson, an NFL cast-off who previously played for the Steelers and the Browns, guided the Texans to 2 other touchdowns — one on a 5-yard pass to Chris Burford and the other on an 8-yard end sweep by Haynes’ understudy, Frank Jackson. Babe Parilli of the Patriots completed 16 of 31 passes for 214 yards.
