Texas Senator John Tower Advocates Desegregation

Jan. 13, 1963 - Senator John Tower (pictured with Vice President Johnson), Republican of Texas, said today the South had not provided equal opportunities for Negroes and that racial desegregation should proceed. Asked on an ABC-TV program called “News and Comment” about his views on Negro rights, Senator Tower answered: “I think Negroes are entitled to their rights under the Constitution. I think that we have to recognize that the case of Brown v. the Board of Education is the law of the land. They certainly should have voting rights. And, as a matter of fact, we have not provided equal opportunities for them in the South. I think we of course should proceed to desegregate in an orderly fashion.”
