Jan. 25, 1962 - Texas Senator Ralph Yarborough (pictured far left in 1960) took himself out of his state’s gubernatorial race today. The Democratic Senator said that President Kennedy’s advice had been a factor in his decision. He added, however, that the President’s position on his possible candidacy had not been “overriding.” Mr. Yarborough told a news conference that the President telephoned him in December to discuss the gubernatorial question. It was also in December that John B. Connally Jr. resigned as Secretary of the Navy to seek the Democratic nomination for governor.
