The First Lady Supports UNICEF

Dec. 4, 1961 - Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy ordered 10 boxes of UNICEF greeting cards today as a symbol of her support of the work of the U.N. Children’s Fund. The proceeds help to support the relief work of the children’s fund. A personal secretary to Mrs. Kennedy described the order as a response to a recent denunciation of the cards by the National Defense Committee of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Members of the D.A.R. have been urged not to buy UNICEF cards. The organization’s publication, The National Defender, called the association of the U.N. with Christmas “part of a broader Communist plan to destroy all religious beliefs and customs.” The publication warned against the transformation of Dec. 25 into what it called a “One-World peace festival.”
