The Shah of Iran Talks Cold War

Nov. 4, 1961 - The Shah of Iran, Mohammed Riza Pahlevi (pictured with his wife, Queen Farah Diba, and their son, Crown Prince Reza), called today for a partnership of the U.S. and Iran to transform Iran into a showplace for the non-Communist world. The Shah warned that the new 20-year program of the Soviet Communist party confronted the world with a new challenge. “Even if this plan is only 50 percent fulfilled, the world will be faced with a new Communist society,” he declared. “If we waste time in countries like mine, time is not going to be on our side.” The Shah said communism would not succeed if prompt measures were taken. But he added: “We have not a minute to lose.”
