Tigers Top Yanks on Triandos Bomb

Apr. 17, 1963 - Ralph Terry, despite his rise in stature among major league pitchers, still finds the home run the bane of his existence. The jinx, which started working on the Oklahoman in 1960, when a homer by Pirate Bill Mazeroski rudely snatched the World Series from the Yankees, showed up again today when a blast by ex-Yankee Gus Triandos (pictured) put the skids under the Yankee right-hander. The blow broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh, and the Detroit Tigers, aided by a ninth-inning 2-run double by Triandos, put the Yankees down, 4-2, before a Yankee Stadium crowd of 16,408. The Detroit victory also gave left-handed Don Mossi his second complete-game triumph of the season, though he too was jarred for homers — one by Hector Lopez, the other by Elston Howard — along with eight other hits. “I fed Triandos a high fastball,” said Terry of the home run pitch. In his three games to date, Terry has allowed only five runs, but four have been the result of homers. “You hate to lose a game that way, but the Tigers have a good lineup. They’ve got guys who can hit homers. They’re not easy.” It was league-leading Detroit’s fifth win in seven games.
