Oct. 1, 1962 - The passing attack of the Giants proved superior to a combined attack of good passing and good running by the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday. Led by Y.A. Tittle, the bald quarterback, who threw four touchdown passes, New York gained a 31-27 victory before 40,916 fans at Pitt Stadium. Once again, the Giants’ defense held when it had to. This time, Erich Barnes made an end-zone interception to save the game with less than two minutes remaining. Tittle wasn’t particular about who got his scoring passes. He tossed them to Paul Dudley, Alex Webster, Frank Gifford (pictured #16), and Del Shofner. It was the third-period toss to Gifford, completed with a fancy catch, that put the Giants ahead for the first time — and ahead to stay. Gifford showed no sign that he had been a retired athlete. It was his best performance since returning to the Giant backfield after a year’s leave.
