June 14, 1962 - The national colors were flown today from office fronts and doorways in honor of Flag Day. It was the 185th anniversary of the adoption of the banner’s design. Patriotic groups throughout New York City pledged allegiance to the flag “and to the Republic for which it stands.” In front of Castle Clinton in Battery Park, Colonel Francis Daugherty, Deputy Chief of Staff, First U.S. Army, told an audience it was a day for “self-searching.” He said it was a time when “each of us should determine how much he truly conforms to the ideals which we proclaim are symbolized in our flag.”
