Top of the Charts: “I’m Leaving It Up to You” by Dale & Grace

Nov. 23, 1963 - Taking the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 today is “I'm Leaving It Up to You,” a recording by the American duo Dale & Grace. The song was written by and originally performed by Don Harris and Dewey Terry in 1957. It replaces “Deep Purple” by Nino Tempo & April Stevens as the top song on the Hot 100. It marks the first time that a duet immediately succeeded another duet as the No. 1 song. Dale & Grace, whose full names are Dale Houston and Grace Broussard, were in Dallas yesterday, the day of President Kennedy’s assassination, and had waved to the President’s motorcade from a vantage point near their hotel moments before the assassination. The duo was scheduled to perform last night as part of Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars. The program was cancelled.
