Top of the Charts: “It’s My Party” by Leslie Gore

June 2, 1963 - Hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 today is “It’s My Party,” a recording by Lesley Gore produced by Quincy Jones. The song portrays the heartbreak of a teenage girl at her birthday party when her boyfriend Johnny disappears, only to return in the company of Judy, who is “wearing his ring,” indicating he has replaced the birthday girl with a new love interest. The song was written by Seymour Gottlieb. It was based on actual events relating to Gottlieb’s daughter Judy’s ‘Sweet 16’ party. The circumstances were somewhat different, however. Young Judy had cried over the prospect of her grandparents being invited.
