Top of the Charts: “My Boyfriend’s Back” by The Angels

Aug. 31, 1963 - Hitting the top of the charts today is “My Boyfriend’s Back,” a recording by a girl group called The Angels. The song begins with a spoken recitation from the lead singer: “He went away, and you hung around and bothered me every night. And when I wouldn't go out with you, you said things that weren't very nice.” The song then becomes an extended warning to the singer’s would-be suitor. Now, the singer declares, her “kinda big and awful strong” boyfriend is back in town and ready to settle the score. Finally, she advises the annoying young man to take “a permanent vacation.” The song’s co-writer, Bob Feldman, was inspired to write the song after overhearing a conversation between a high school girl and the boy she was rebuffing.
