Trojans top Badgers in All-Time Highest-Scoring Rose Bowl, 42-37

Jan. 1, 1963 - Southern California’s national champion Trojans scored early and often and then hung on for dear life to edge the University of Wisconsin, 42-37, today in the all-time highest-scoring Rose Bowl. The Badgers, Big Ten champions and rated second only to the Trojans, almost beat USC with 23 points in the final quarter. But they just couldn’t catch up. The wild finish, sparked by Wisconsin’s superb quarterback, Ron Vanderkelen, left 98,698 spectators limp and hoarse. The total of 79 points far surpassed the previous Rose Bowl record set in 1930 when USC defeated Pittsburgh, 47-14. Vanderkelen, magnificent in adversity, set another Rose Bowl record by completing 33 of 48 passes for 401 yards, including 2 touchdowns. He also scored on a 17-yard run himself. But Pete Beathard, his opposing quarterback, was almost as flashy, if not as prolific. Beathard threw 4 touchdown passes in completing 8 of 12.
