Truman: Soviets Are Bluffing, "Scared to Death of Red China"

July 29, 1961 - Former President Harry S. Truman, who won his own Berlin showdown in 1948-9, said today the Soviet Union was bluffing in the current crisis. He said Russia was too afraid of Communist China to risk a war. He also said that President Kennedy's address last week called the Soviet bluff. Mr. Truman stated, "The Russians are the greatest bluffers in the history of the world. When their bluff is called, they quit. All we need to do is show them we mean business. Russia is scared to death of what's behind her - Red China."
