Sept. 14, 1963 - Tonight marks the series premiere of “The Lieutenant,” an hourlong Marine Corps-oriented series starring Gary Lockwood and Robert Vaughn (pictured). The series, created by Gene Roddenberry, airs on NBC at 7:30 p.m. Situated at Camp Pendleton, the West Coast base of the Marine Corps, “The Lieutenant” focuses on the lives of enlisted Marines and officers alike. The title character is Second Lieut. William Tiberius Rice (Lockwood), a rifle platoon leader and one of the training instructors at Camp Pendleton. On tonight’s episode, platoon morale is threatened when an enlisted man (Bill Bixby) uses his friendship with Rice to gain favors.
