Nov. 30, 1962 - The General Assembly unanimously elected U Thant (right) today as Secretary General of the United Nations until Nov. 3, 1966. The approval came three and a half hours after the Security Council, meeting in closed session, unanimously gave its required recommendation of the 53-year-old Burmese diplomat for one of the highest posts in world diplomacy. Today’s election removed the term “Acting” from the title of Secretary General, a qualification that Mr. Thant had borne since his interim election Nov. 3, 1961. He was appointed then to fill the unexpired term of Dag Hammarskjold, who was killed Sept. 19, 1961, in a plane crash in Africa.
