U Thant is Acting Secretary General of U.N.

Nov. 3, 1961 - The General Assembly unanimously elected U Thant (left) of Burma as Acting Secretary General of the United Nations today. This ended a crisis that had left the world organization without a leader for six weeks in the face of urgent problems. The Burmese delegate took a solemn oath today “not to seek or accept instructions in regard to the performance of my duties from any government or other authority external to the organization.”
