Feb. 19, 1963 - Vada Pinson (pictured), star center fielder of the Cincinnati Reds, had his appendix removed in an emergency operation last night and will likely miss the entire spring training season. After the operation at Providence Hospital in Oakland, Calif., Pinson’s physician told the outfielder’s wife, Jacqueline, the 24-year-old veteran may not get back to normal activity before April 1. The Reds open their National League season April 8. Pinson complained of stomach pains after breakfast yesterday. When the pains grew worse, his wife persuaded him to check with the family physician, Dr. Ed Spiegel. The operation was performed at 9 p.m. last night. Dr. Spiegel said the appendix was swollen, inflamed, and in danger of rupturing. The operation required two hours.
