[VIDEO] Apr. 8, 1965 | LBJ Vietnam Newsreel

Apr. 8, 1965 - In an important departure from policy last night, President Johnson said the U.S. is ready to begin Vietnam peace talks without the conditions previously stressed, such as a halt to North Vietnamese aggression.

However, Johnson stressed that a lasting solution to the “dirty, brutal and difficult” war depends on several “essentials” that will guarantee the independence of South Vietnam.

In his major policy speech to 1,300 persons at Johns Hopkins University, the President said the U.S. is prepared to begin “unconditional discussions” to end the war.
