[VIDEO] Feb. 25, 1965 | Crisis and Change in South Vietnam

Feb. 25, 1965 - Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Khanh, showing no bitterness over his ouster as South Vietnam’s political boss, said on arrival in Hong Kong today that he planned to stump the capitals of the world to win support for his country’s fight against Red aggression.

Khanh did not rule out a negotiated settlement of the war in South Vietnam but insisted that talks cannot be instituted until Communist Viet Cong forces withdraw from South Vietnam.

Instead of appearing as a booted-out exile, Khanh almost gave the impression that he had chosen his new post himself.

“The war in Vietnam has reached a critical stage in which military effort must be supported by diplomatic effort,” Khanh said. “I am pleased that my government has designated me to continue the fight in the diplomatic field.”
