Viet Cong Have Constructed Labyrinth of Tunnels

July 4, 1963 - A fantastic labyrinth of tunnels, still manned by Communist Viet Cong guerrillas, has been found by chance only 25 miles northwest of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. The network includes communication tunnels and supply depots stretching at least 15 miles. U.S. officials, from what they know of it, believe the guerrillas needed at least eight years to complete the system. The South Vietnamese army is methodically probing and destroying the labyrinth from the surface, pouring in tear gas, smoke, and other chemicals. How many guerrillas are in the tunnels is unknown. Every so often a guerrilla sniper will pop up from an opening and open fire. In recent days, such snipers have killed 9 Government soldiers and a U.S. adviser and wounded 50. Armored personnel carriers and tanks combing the tangled jungle region stumbled on the underground complex last weekend. One tank sank into the soil over a subterranean supply depot.
