Dec. 13, 1962 - A further round in network rivalry in news coverage was foreseen today in CBS’s announcement that next fall it would expand its television summary hosted by Walter Cronkite (right) to a full half hour. The evening news program of 15 minutes or less has been standard in broadcasting for many years. Richard S. Salant, president of CBS News, has been campaigning for a long time for a half-hour evening program Mondays through Fridays. It has been his contention that without the expanded period, it has not been possible for TV to report the news in depth. In the coverage of election night results last month, CBS received as much critical praise as NBC. Now it is anxious to maintain its momentum.
