Warriors Top Hawks in Oakland

Mar. 15, 1963 - Cliff Hagan (pictured) fell 3 points short of scoring his 10,000th point in NBA competition and the St. Louis Hawks missed by 11 in a fierce fourth-quarter effort to overtake the San Francisco Warriors tonight in Oakland, Calif. The victory was the Warriors' first in the last 6 tries against the Hawks. In the third quarter, Hagan was belted over the eye, and he sat out the remainder of the game. He undoubtedly will hit the 10,000 plateau Sunday as the Hawks end their regular schedule at home in a playoff preview against Detroit. The Hawks whittled away at the Warrior lead after the first period and almost caught up on the tremendous fourth quarter gunnery of big Bob Pettit and Charlie Vaughn. But Warrior center Wilt Chamberlain, who sank 14 of his 20 shots from the floor, hit one of his patented fall-away jumpers, Wayne Hightower hit a long-range jumper, and Al Attles sank two free throws as San Francisco pulled away for good. Chamberlain topped all scorers with 38, followed by Pettit with 30.
