Feb. 24, 1963 - West German university students observed this weekend the 20th anniversary of the execution of Hans and Sophie Scholl (pictured in 1940). The brother and sister, Munich University students, were executed by guillotine Feb. 22, 1943, in the Stadelheim Prison, after they had been caught distributing anti-Nazi leaflets on the campus. “Throw off the mantle of indifference that envelops your heart!” said one of the Scholl leaflets. “Act before it is too late!” The idealistic example of the little Scholl resistance group, called the White Rose, is treasured by West Germany, which is still experiencing repercussions of the massive evil done in Germany’s name.
