West Germany Asks Chile to Extradite Former Nazi

Dec. 5, 1962 - West Germany has asked the Chilean Government to extradite Walter Rauff, an alleged former collaborator of Adolf Eichmann. Rauff (pictured right after his arrest in Italy in 1945) is wanted by West German authorities on charges of crimes against humanity. Rauff was picked up by Chilean authorities in Punta Arenas yesterday at West Germany’s request. He was taken to Santiago, where a Chilean court will decide on West Germany’s application for his extradition. The former Nazi officer, a section chief in the dreaded Reich security office in Berlin, is suspected of complicity in the murder of 90,000 Jews during World War II. He is said to have been instrumental in the implementation of the Nazis' genocide by mobile gas chamber. He was arrested in 1945, but subsequently escaped and was never brought to trial. Eichmann, who worked for the same office, was hanged in Israel last spring for the mass murder of Jews and others during the war.
