Wills Closes in on Cobb Base-Stealing Record

Sept. 9, 1962 - The Los Angeles Dodgers’ shortstop, Maury Wills, stole 3 more bases today and pulled to within 10 of Ty Cobb’s modern major league record of 96 as the league-leading Dodgers defeated Pittsburgh, 5-3, before 37,594 fans in Los Angeles. The Dodgers stayed a half game ahead of the second-place Giants, who defeated the Cubs, 5-4. Johnny Podres was touched for 11 hits and 3 runs in 7 innings, but gained his thirteenth victory in 24 decisions. The loser was Bob Friend (16-13). Wills hit three singles in four times at bat, stole second after each hit, and scored twice.
