Aug. 31, 1962 - Nothing corrects Yankee tailspins like the sight of right-handed pitchers wearing Kansas City uniforms. The American League leaders today downed the ninth-place Athletics, 5-1, at Yankee Stadium. Two of the Bombers’ fifteen hits were provided by the starting pitcher, Whitey Ford. Bobby Richardson, Cletis Boyer, Phil Linz, and Hector Lopez also got two hits apiece. As a hurler, Ford limited the visitors to one run despite a generous yield of eight hits before tiring in the eighth. He was under no duress when he departed. The bases were empty when he handed the ball to Marshall Bridges. With today’s triumph, the Yankees maintained a three-game lead over second-place Minnesota.
