Aug. 2, 1961 - The Yankees swept a double-header from the Kansas City Athletics at the Stadium today. The scores were 6-5 and 12-5. The double victory had one disappointment, however. Whitey Ford, the mighty little lefty, failed to win his 20th game. Whitey was relieved by Luis Arroyo in the ninth inning of the opener with the score 5-5. In the second game, Mickey Mantle hit a first-inning shot into the third deck in right field for his 40th homer. The two-run drive tied him with Roger Maris for the major league lead. Both are 17 games ahead of the pace set by Babe Ruth when he established the record of 60 homers in 1927.
