Aug. 21, 1962 - Urged on by the roars of a crowd of 50,830 at Chavez Ravine, Bill Rigney’s astounding Angels made a heroic effort tonight to keep aloft in the American League pennant race. They even carried the mighty Yankees into extra innings, but there they ran out of heroics. In the 10th, the Angels descended from the clouds with a crash as Ralph Houk’s Bombers battered two relief hurlers, Ryne Duren and Jack Spring, for 7 runs, the final 4 riding in on a grand slam by Roger Maris. That gave the Bombers the opener of the 3-game series, 11-4. It also increased the Yankee lead to five games over the Angels, who dropped back into a virtual tie for second place with the Minnesota Twins.#MLB #baseball #OTD #1960s #yankees #angels
